BACKGROUND Finns are emotionally introverted. According to the Happiness Research Institute, we rarely rank highly on emotional expressions. We are stoic people, reserved about our emotions. And as the pandemic isolated our nation indoors, we also hid our emotions even deeper. CHALLENGE The Finland Forward project coordinated by the Prime Minister’s Office aims to support the ability of people and society to cope with crises and strengthen psychological resilience through communication. Their goal is to offer emotional support, help build trust among communities and create a channel for assistance and support. BRIEF How can we support the ability of people to cope with Covid-19’s crisis and strengthen psychological resilience through communication? INSIGHT According to experts, the first step in recovering from any crisis is understanding our emotions. The experience of being heard and seen is an important factor in maintaining psychological resilience. EXECUTION Based on the insight, we wanted to create a platform that would encourage self-reflection within the broader context of the pandemic phenomena. Our strategic approach was not just to archive the emotions triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic but also to help people reflect on them and raise attention to its psychological and emotional impact. We launched the world’s first museum dedicated solely to pandemic emotions. The Museum of Contemporary Emotions is a virtual museum combining science and art to document the monumental developments of a pandemic and record the feelings experienced by Finnish citizens. The Museum draws on the academic theory of six primary human emotions: anger, surprise, disgust, happiness, fear and sadness. Visitors traverse the pandemic through an interactive timeline from which they can visit behaviours, like toilet paper hoarding.
