Creative idea:
Drops of Life is a global social ecological initiative that rethinks an invisible urban resource – air conditioner condensate – and turns it into a life saving water source for wild city birds during extreme heatwaves. As climate change intensifies, cities increasingly lack accessible drinking water for urban wildlife. At the same time, millions of air conditioners run daily, silently producing up to 30 litres of clean condensate water per unit – water that is usually wasted. One air conditioner can provide enough water to support up to 1,200 birds during peak heat days. The idea was simple and was made as free open source initiative: redirect condensate water into specially designed bird waterers with proper water treatment or simple drip-filtration. Partnering with Electrolux, wildlife conservation foundations and eco communities, the initiative scaled across more than 12 countries around the world. Drops of Life demonstrates how existing urban infrastructure can be repurposed to address climate impact immediately – proving that sometimes the most powerful solution isn’t creating something new, but recognising the value of what we already waste.
